Beautifully situated amongst Crete’s fertile heartland, the Mantilari Estate is a Simpson Signature property with a difference; a place of charm and serenity, where simplicity reigns and life’s sweet pleasures are the order of the day. The views showcase the very best of the popular wine-growing region; a romantic panorama of rolling hills where neat vineyards border ancient olive groves and the silhouettes of distant mountain ridges rise as the proud backdrop to it all.

The accommodation is arranged across four buildings and consists of seven luxurious one and two-bedroom suites. Most have their own kitchen and terrace or balcony, offering a wonderfully versatile arrangement for large groups and multiple families travelling together and requiring a little independence too. If you prefer not to self cater and just enjoy the serenity of this magical spot, the owners can provide a hearty Cretan breakfast and daily-changing lunch or dinner menu of traditional local dishes by arrangement. Interiors are sympathetically designed to enhance the natural beauty of the place, a restful blend of tradition and comfort where classic style is underscored by an easy elegance that would be equally at home in Tuscany or Provence.

The 10-acre estate is home to a bountiful selection of fruit trees and the view of the Mantilari vineyards just wouldn’t be complete without sampling the local harvest. The wine cellar is well stocked with the delicious results, readily available for guests to enjoy and the owners are also happy to arrange a guided tour of the vineyard. With a number of other excellent wineries in the area, this is a perfect spot for anyone wishing to develop their knowledge of Cretan wines.

The grounds have plenty to offer, including a tennis court, gym, fitness room and children’s play area, as well as multiple terraces and scenic spots to relax quietly with a book or in the company of friends. There are two swimming pools, one of which can be heated, and the main house is home to a magnificent sun room, a delightful venue for morning coffee or an evening drink in the cooler months. Entertaining is easy thanks to the large kitchen in Basilicum which can happily cater for everyone staying on the estate, while outside on the main terrace there is ample room for everyone to gather in style and enjoy a meal together. For added convenience, a private chef can be arranged with prior notice and the local taverna in Myrtia will offer a meal delivery service on request.

The Mantilari Estate enjoys a blissful rural location away from the mainstream tourist destinations. However, its proximity to the vibrant capital Heraklion (25 minutes by car) makes it exceptionally well placed for exploring some of Crete’s most famous attractions, including the Archaeological Museum which houses the largest collection of Minoan artefacts in the world and the Palace of Knossos. It’s auspicious setting also affords an opportunity to explore both north and south coast beaches and discover the extraordinary diversity the island has to offer.

Closer to home, there are sleepier but no less charming attractions in the surrounding hills and villages. Myrtia, birthplace of Zorba the Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis, is home to a fascinating museum in his name; Agarathos Monastery, one of the richest monasteries in Crete during the Venetian period, is steeped in history; and the Gorge of Karteros offers breath taking walks for all abilities. Whether you venture out, idle away your days by the sun-drenched pool or challenge your party to a little sporting competition on the tennis court, this bewitching spot will hold you spellbound.
